How to Light Shabbat Candles

Where to place?

Set up your Shabbat candles in a designated area where they will remain undisturbed throughout Shabbat, away from doors and free of drafts.

Place the candles securely in their candlesticks or holders, ensuring they won't tip over. If necessary, soften the wax by lighting the bottom of the candles and place them in the holders while still melted. 

 

 

How to light?

Using a match or a candle lighter, carefully light the Shabbat candles.

 

 

How to bless?

After lighting the candles, recite the blessing. Place your hands over the flames and cover your eyes.

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה אַדֹנָ-י אֱ-לֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו וְצִוָּנוּ לְהַדְלִיק נֵר שֶׁל שַׁבָּת קֹדֶשׁ

Transliteration: Bah-rookh ah-tah ah-doh-noi eh-loh-hay-noo meh-lekh hah-oh-lahm ah-sher ki-deh-shah-noo beh-mitz-voh-tahv veh-tzee-vah-noo leh-hahd-lik nehr shehl shah-baht koh-dehsh.

Translation: Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments, and commanded us to kindle the light of the holy Shabbat.
